Bachelor of Contemporary International Studies (BCIS)
The Bachelor of Contemporary International Studies (BCIS) is a fully NZQA accredited, three-year degree. In this interdisciplinary degree students can choose to major in the following areas:International Business, International Relations, Japanese Studies, Language (TESOL) Studies andEnvironmental Studies. While specialising in their chosen major, students also gain an understanding of current issues across all areas. In the BCIS, students can enhance their learning and gain practical workforce skills through IPC's internship programme. Upon graduation, IPC offers assistance in job placement.
Students receive a solid grounding in practical business concepts and principles through instruction that places equal emphasis on both theory and application. Papers investigate contemporary international business issues relevant to students from diverse cultural backgrounds who are seeking employment in international companies or in small businesses.
For students who wish to pursue a career in accountancy, IPC offers papers fulfilling the academic requirements of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) Accounting Technician (AT) Qualification. P
Language (TESOL) Studies:
The Language Studies (TESOL) major includes 8 compulsory papers, 6 language and/or culture papers, 8 specialty papers and 2 electives.

Wellington Girls’ College is an all girls state high school with a roll of 1350 students including 70 international students from Asia and Europe. We enrol students from Year 9 (13 years old) – Year 13 (18 years old). Wellington Girls’ College has a long-standing reputation of excellent teaching and extra-curricular programmes and our national examination results are consistently amongst the top results for state high schools in NZ. There is a strong demand for places for New Zealand and overseas students at Wellington Girls’ College.
Wellington Girls’ College enrols international students from Years 10 – 13 from all over the world, primarily from Asia and Europe. Our classroom programmes are suited to English language learning and academic achievement. Our school and extra-curricular programmes are well suited to experiencing NZ lifestyle and culture.
Language and Lifestyle:
Students can come for a language and lifestyle experience from one term to one year. We rarely offer short stay or group programmes.
Many students come to WGC to achieve a University Entrance qualification for NZ or overseas universities. To achieve University Entrance, students must allow a minimum of two years and preferably three years study at Year 11, 12 and 13, starting in February of Year 11.
Students study towards the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) and our results are consistently amongst the highest state school results in NZ. In 2014, 96% of WGC students achieved Level 1, 97% achieved Level 2, 94% achieved Level 3 NCEA.
We offer English language classes at all levels including academic English preparation for tertiary study. English language classes are small and students have one or two English language lessons each day, as required. Our teachers are trained and qualified English language teachers. Language support is also available for other subjects and peer tutoring (Year 13 student support) is offered in Mathematics, Science and Commerce.
Students wanting entry to Year 12 and aiming for university entrance, should have a minimum of 5.5 IELTS. University entrance students will only be accepted directly into Year 13 with IELTS of 6.5. Students will sit an English language assessment on arrival at school to ascertain how much language support is required and to assist with subject selection. Students may also be asked to sit a Mathematics test to determine the appropriate level of study.
Students study a different number of subjects at each year level. Students in Year 9 take 9 subjects, Year 10 take eight subjects, in Years 11 and 12 students take six subjects and Year 13 students study five subjects.
Wellington Girls’ College international students have the choice of living with a Homestay family, or living with a caregiver nominated by the student’s family. There is no boarding hostel.
Either- living with a caregiver, arranged by the student's family.
You will be required to sign an indemnity document taking full responsibility for this placement.
The College, however, under its duty of care must be satisfied that this arrangement meets the standards it requires for the safety of our International students. The Director of International Students will therefore meet with and maintain contact with this caregiver.
Or - taking part in the Wellington Girls' College Homestay Programme.
Wellington Girls' College can find students homestay accommodation, which will be a fully-furnished room with a study desk, internet access and all meals and laundry facilities included. Homestay accommodation continues throughout the mid-year school holidays. Homestay accommodation over the long summer vacation is by prior arrangement.
All homestays are checked and approved by the College. The families have been vetted by the New Zealand Police. The Homestay Manager will support both the homestay families and the students to promote a happy positive relationship.
