Once the heart of the ancient Aztec civilization, Mexico City has since grown into a vast metropolis with more than 20 million people living in and around the nation's capital. Interestingly, up until not so long ago, many travelers were wary of visiting the city, put off by warnings of rampant crime, crumbling infrastructure, and stifling pollution. Zip to the present, however, and D.F. -- as it's more commonly known -- is not only considered a fantastic destination for tourists, but has also eased itself into the position of one of the coolest cities on the planet. This is largely thanks to the regeneration and promotion of many of its barrios, from hipster-filled Roma to arty San Rafael. Each neighborhood has its own distinctive vibe, style, and even inhabitants. A comprehensive estimate revealed that GDP grew 2.0% annually in Q4, which marked the fastest rate of growth since Q1 2014. Moreover, FocusEconomics estimates that GDP expanded 1.9% in the first quarter of 2018, broadly keeping pace. Higher commodities prices, solid global growth and accommodative financial conditions are expected to have supported growth in the region in Q1.
Latin America: Dollarized Countries See Lowest Inflation
Ecuador, El Salvador and Panama among the inflation winners. While Argentina’s government continues to struggle with inflation, three Latin American countries that use the dollar as their legal tender are among the winners in terms of keeping consumer price rises in check. Ecuador, El Salvador and Panama will have Latin America’s lowest inflation rates this year and over the next five years, along with Peru, which has long been known for its successful monetary policies and does not use the US dollar, according to a Latinvex analysis of new projections from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
