To celebrate the success of the CAPE YES Delegation to Brazil, Brazilian Ambassador HE Paulo de Camargo (5th from left in photo) hosted a reception for the students and delegation organisers on Thursday, 8 February 2018. After the Ambassador welcomed attendees to the event Dr Matthew O’Meagher (Director, Latin America CAPE, extreme left in photo) outlined how the mission had come about and the students who had gone to Sao Paulo spoke about their experiences.

23 Latin American Women who have Made History
L to R: Marielle Franco was a Brazilian councilwoman and activist who advocated for the LGBT community, Afro-Brazilians, women, people in the favelas, and many other marginalized groups. She was also an outspoken critic of policy brutality. She was assassinated in Rio de Janeiro on March 16, 2018 after leaving an event called “Young Black Women Who Are Changing Power Structures.” (article by Glenn Greenwald writing in the Independent). Thousands of people took to the streets of Brazil to protest and demand justice; Rigoberta Menchú (middle above) is a Guatemalan human rights activist. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for her fight to defend indigenous and human rights in her country; Juanan Azurduy was the heroine of the independence of Upper Peru (present day Bolivia). After her husband's death, she took control of the troops and achieved significant military victories.

Economic Recovery appears to regain momentum in Q1
March 14, 2018 - Recent data for Latin America signals that economic activity in the region ended 2017 on a weaker footing than previously thought. An estimate shows that the Latin American economies expanded an aggregated 1.9% annually in Q4. While the print was above Q3’s 1.6% expansion, it was well below the 2.1% preliminary estimate expected last month. The downward adjustment mostly reflected weaker-than-expected growth in Brazil, Colombia and Peru, along with a downgrade to Mexico’s GDP data for Q4. US Blocks Venezuela Cryptocurrency Trump Administration blocks chain for Venezuelan cryptocurrency transactions. On March 19, 2018, the White House released a new executive order titled “Taking Additional Steps to Address the Situation in Venezuela.” The short executive order deals with the topic of Venezuelan cryptocurrencies and prohibits all transactions related to, the provision of financing for, and other dealings in, by a United States person or within the United States, any digital currency, digital coin, or digital token, that was issued by, for, or on behalf of the Government of Venezuela on or after January 9, 2018. |
