GTSA News Blog: Buenos Aires: Palacio Álzaga Unzué: The most luxurious wedding gift in Argentina’s history On May 8th, 1916, there was a large party in Buenos Aires. Two offspring of the aristocracy, Félix Saturnino de Álzaga Unzué, 31, and Elena Peña Unzué, 24, were married with all pomp and ceremony in the Church of St. Augustine. As corresponding to a wedding of that rank, the couple received innumerable gifts. But nothing was like the gift of the groom that he gave to his new wife: a superb palace a few meters from the exclusive Avenue Alvear, in the neighborhood of Retiro, which to this day still surprises many by its noble Porte. The contrast between the red of the brick and the grey of the stone, in the English academic style; The Corinthian columns that Lord at the main entrance of Cerrito Street; The ornamentation reloaded from the Frontis, with vegetal elements, shields, and figureheads; The Apizarrado ceiling and its elegant attics. Everything on the facade of the building refers to abundance and ostentation. |
Latin Americans, on a whole, seem to be a much happier crowd than folks living in the United States, a new global survey suggests. And the same is true even for those living in countries known for violent drug wars and sputtering economies.
The Annual End of Year Survey for 2015 by Gallup and WIN, an international market-research association, asked people in 68 countries whether they’re happy with their lives and if they feel optimistic about their nation’s economic situation. The results might come as a surprise, especially to people in the United States, who tend to think they have things better off than the rest of the world. But maybe not. The happiest nation in the world, according to the survey’s ranking, is Colombia, which topped the charts with an impressive 87% of respondents saying they’re happy. Only 2% of Colombians say they’re unhappy. That puts the South American nation’s “net happiness score” at 85%. - Fusion.tv |

Maracaibo, the story of Venezuela's collapse
Maracaibo is the second-largest city in Venezuela. Its residents face soaring inflation, widespread poverty and shortages. Under Hugo Chavez, Venezuela based its economy on oil exports. But the fall in oil prices led to a crippling economic crisis. Most people can no longer afford to buy food and the fishermen of Lake Maracaibo resort to smuggling to sell their meagre catch in neighbouring Colombia. |

LATIN AMERICAN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
Recovery stalls in third quarter
Incoming data suggests that the Latin American economy remained soft in the third quarter. FocusEconomics estimates that regional GDP growth (excluding Venezuela) remained broadly unchanged, inching up from Q2’s 1.7% to 1.8% year-on-year. The second quarter’s result had marked the worst performance in one year as shocks in major-players Argentina and Brazil held back growth. Preliminary data revealed that growth was stable in Mexico in the third quarter. The economy grew a solid 2.6% annually, with the services sector in the drivers’ seat amid higher consumer sentiment following the end of the country’s turbulent election cycle. Faster growth in the agricultural sector also supported activity, while mining activity was subdued due to weak oil and gas output... Mexico’s AMLO: A New Chavez or Lula? Will Mexico’s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who in December assumes the presidency of Latin America’s second-largest economy, become a new Hugo Chavez (the man who ruined Venezuela’s once-prosperous economy) or a new Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (the leftist firebrand who in the end implemented relatively pragmatic economic policies and presided over Brazil’s best economic performance in 25 years)? What is certain so far is that Mexico is in for more uncertainty than it has seen in a while. Although Lopez Obrador (popularly known as AMLO) was seen as a pragmatic mayor of capital Mexico City in 2000 to 2005, he has scared investors with his threats against Mexico’s historic energy liberalization and construction of the new, $13 billion Mexico City international airport... |
