New Zealand praised for refusing to back Venezuela's interim president Juan Guaidó

New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Minister Winston Peters' refusal to back our allies in supporting Venezuela's interim president has caught the world's attention, with many hailing the decision.

Last week, opposition leader Juan Guaidó declared himself Venezuela's interim president in an intense acceleration of efforts to force out Nicolás Maduro, who has overseen the country fall into economic crisis.
While Mr Guaidó quickly gained the support of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and even Australia, New Zealand has chosen not to take a side in the leadership debate, instead remaining neutral.....

Foreign minister Winston Peters says Venezuela needs to ‘decide its future through free and fair elections’...

In a stark departure from its allies, the New Zealand government is refusing to take sides in the escalating Venezuelan leadership crisis, declining to give official recognition to either leader.

New Zealand’s foreign minister, Winston Peters, has refused to add New Zealand’s name to the list backing Guaidó. “It is not New Zealand’s practice to make statements of recognition of governments,” Peters said.

“Venezuela needs to decide its future through free and fair elections. This government expressed concerns about Venezuela’s elections in 2018, and these concerns remain.”.....

Here’s How Jair Bolsonaro Wants to Transform Brazil

Land rights, education, the economy, and public security lie at the nexus of the Brazilian president’s priorities and critics’ concerns.  If you’re shocked by the transformations that Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s new president, is planning for his country, you haven’t been paying attention. Riding in on a wave of frustration with more than a decade of left-wing leadership, Bolsonaro has promised to bring dramatic change to Brazil, change intended to make leftists squirm...

Mexico’s presidential palace opens its doors to visitors for the first time

Picture

If you plan to take a vacation in Mexico City, you’ll be able to visit the presidential palace, which was previously off-limits to visitors. As part of his austerity drive, new president, Andres Manuel López Obrador, has declared that the sumptuous residence, known as Los Pinos, will become a cultural centre open to the public daily from 10am to 5pm.

The president took office on 1 December 2018, five months after winning a landslide election victory, and opening the palace is part of what he says is a ‘deep and radical’ change in
Mexico. Vowing to lead his anti-corruption, pro-austerity drive by example, and promising that he would not change his lifestyle, he has eschewed the presidential residence, jet and security detail, and is also taking a 60% cut in salary. He is expected to move from his regular home in a middle-class neighbourhood into an apartment in the city’s historic centre, and will use the National Palace as his presidential office.

Since it opened to the public, locals and visitors have been pouring in to see the former official residence of the country’s presidents from 1935 to 2018. The 56,000-square-metre building is 14 times larger than the
White House in the US, and is located in a section of the capital’s huge Chapultepec park. The houses that can be visited within the enclosure will be Miguel Alemán, López Mateos, Miguel de la Madrid, Venustiano Carranza and Lázaro Cárdenas. The main interest is likely to be in Casa Miguel Alemán, as most of the presidents have lived there apart from Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderón, although they did use the space for meetings and visits.

Jair Bolsonaro says he will ‘open up’ Brazil’s economy in pro-business speech at Davos

Brazil’s rightwing president Jair Bolsonaro causes alarm among environmentalists after stressing that protecting his country’s unique ecosystem has to be consistent with economic growth. His brief speech to the World Economic Forum outlines a tax-cutting, privatisation agenda. Bolsonaro pledges to bring about economic change, saying that by the end of his term, Brazil will be ‘in the ranking of the 50 best countries to do business with’...

Recovery slumps in third quarter; eyes turn to policy after election-filled 2018

January 16, 2019 - Latin America’s economic recovery lost momentum in the third quarter of 2018, with growth decelerating for the third consecutive period. A comprehensive estimate revealed that regional GDP expanded 1.5% annually in Q3, below Q2’s 1.7% expansion and the slowest growth rate since Q2 2017. Tighter global financial conditions and a sharp shift in sentiment away from emerging markets hampered regional activity in the period, along with softening global trade. In addition, internal dynamics also played a role. Argentina’s economic adjustment, in particular, continued to drag on the Latin American economy, especially affecting its regional trading partners...

Ecuador: Economic Policy Changes

Ecuador’s National Assembly in June approved a fast-track economic bill which, among other provisions, seeks to encourage companies to boost investments in the country and also paves the way for the government to receive additional revenues through a tax amnesty. Which components of the measure are most important? What is the outlook for Ecuador’s economy under the new measures? Will businesses increase investments in the country in the months ahead? How well is President Lenín Moreno managing the economy?
