23 Latin American Women who have Made History

L to R: Marielle Franco was a Brazilian councilwoman and activist who advocated for the LGBT community, Afro-Brazilians, women, people in the favelas, and many other marginalized groups. She was also an outspoken critic of policy brutality. She was assassinated in Rio de Janeiro on March 16, 2018 after leaving an event called “Young Black Women Who Are Changing Power Structures.” (article by Glenn Greenwald writing in the Independent). Thousands of people took to the streets of Brazil to protest and demand justice; Rigoberta Menchú (middle above) is a Guatemalan human rights activist. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for her fight to defend indigenous and human rights in her country; Juanan Azurduy was the heroine of the independence of Upper Peru (present day Bolivia). After her husband's death, she took control of the troops and achieved significant military victories.

Economic Recovery appears to regain momentum in Q1

March 14, 2018 - Recent data for Latin America signals that economic activity in the region ended 2017 on a weaker footing than previously thought. An estimate shows that the Latin American economies expanded an aggregated 1.9% annually in Q4. While the print was above Q3’s 1.6% expansion, it was well below the 2.1% preliminary estimate expected last month. The downward adjustment mostly reflected weaker-than-expected growth in
Brazil, Colombia and Peru, along with a downgrade to Mexico’s GDP data for Q4.

NAFTA Arbitration: Investors Face Possible Loss

US investors face possible loss of investment treaty arbitration under NAFTA.  The survival of investment treaty arbitration under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) renegotiation process is at a critical point. An agreement in principle, which could be announced as early as next week, potentially could exclude an investment chapter. That's a distinct possibility because, up to now, there seems to have been no progress on discussions over a concrete textual proposal to retain or "modernize" the existing Chapter 11.
