A quarter of a century ago the WTO was seen as the future. Today it could be dancing its last tango. That’s how much things have changed...

Brazil future unclear amid opposing ideologies of ministers

RIO DE JANEIRO - With his inauguration just weeks away, Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro is assembling a Cabinet of ministers with starkly different views on key issues like climate change, the economy and China. Bolsonaro has appointed a neoliberal finance minister, a foreign minister who describes globalization as "an anti-human and anti-Christian system," supporters and critics of China's role in the region and a justice minister who is arguably the world's most renowned corruption fighter...

GTSA News Blog: Buenos Aires: Palacio Álzaga Unzué: The most luxurious wedding gift in Argentina’s history

On May 8th, 1916, there was a large party in Buenos Aires. Two offspring of the aristocracy, Félix Saturnino de Álzaga Unzué, 31, and Elena Peña Unzué, 24, were married with all pomp and ceremony in the Church of St. Augustine.

As corresponding to a wedding of that rank, the couple received innumerable gifts. But nothing was like the gift of the groom that he gave to his new wife: a superb palace a few meters from the exclusive Avenue Alvear, in the neighborhood of Retiro, which to this day still surprises many by its noble Porte.

The contrast between the red of the brick and the grey of the stone, in the English academic style; The Corinthian columns that Lord at the main entrance of Cerrito Street; The ornamentation reloaded from the Frontis, with vegetal elements, shields, and figureheads; The Apizarrado ceiling and its elegant attics. Everything on the facade of the building refers to abundance and ostentation....

Growth remains lackluster in the third quarter amid conflicting dynamics

December 5, 2018 - A preliminary estimate revealed that growth in the Latin American economy was unchanged in the third quarter, as uneven dynamics across economies kept activity moderate. FocusEconomics estimates that regional GDP growth (excluding Venezuela) came in at 1.6% year-on-year, matching the second quarter’s reading and one of the worst results seen in the past year and a half. A less favorable external backdrop and political noise likely held back growth, despite an improving labor market...

Mexico Airport: Default, Investor Confidence Loss

Forget the honeymoon period normally granted to new presidents. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador hasn’t even assumed Mexico’s presidency yet and has already ruined his relationship with local and foreign investors.
This week he announced he was cancelling the new, $13 billion airport being built in Mexico City – a move made despite warnings not to do so from technical experts, the local business community, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and even the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)...
