Paraguay is a calm oasis in Latin America with increasing macroeconomic stability.

The Paraguayan economy puts Carlos Fernández Valdovinos, former governor of Banco Central del Paraguay, now director at Banco Basa, in mind of Charles Darwin. Paraguay has had to adapt to survive rising interest rates, falling commodity prices and their impact on major trading partners such as Brazil and Chile, and other changes....

The Ateneo Grand Splendid, an architectural jewel in Buenos Aires, is the world's most beautiful bookstore according to National Geographic.

"On a bustling commercial street in the fashionable Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, you can visit a serene temple of books", the world-renowned publication said of the city's most famous bookstore.

"Conversations are hushed, as if in a grand library, yet the space is so warm and welcoming that the raised café at the back of the cavernous room is filled with patrons reading and sipping cappuccinos and chocolate submarinos", its article added.

Built from 1903 in Recoleta, the "Grand Splendid" theatre hosted the country's first radio auditions in the 1920s and later incorporated a record label.

In 2000, it reopened as a bookstore and today it hosts one of Latin America's largest collections, including 90,000 titles and 200,000 books, as well as 35,000 albums and 24,000 films. The store has a staff of 50 people....

Growth projected to regain some steam in Q4; crisis-stricken Venezuela groans under oil sanctions

February 13, 2019 - Latin America’s bumpy economic recovery is expected to have had a better quarter at the end of 2018, after growth slumped in the third quarter. FocusEconomics estimates that GDP increased 1.7% year-on-year in Q4, above Q3’s 1.5%. Despite the modest uptick, growth remains weak in the Latin American economy, which had a disappointing 2018 overall. Weaker global trade, a noisy election cycle, shifting sentiment for emerging-market assets and one-off shocks in major players caused the recovery to flounder last year....

AMLO & Mexico’s New Energy Model

Will Mexico’s energy model go forwards, backwards, or sideways?  The 2013 Mexican energy reform by the administration of President Enrique Peña Nieto put in place a new energy model that, for the first time in 75 years, allowed foreign and private investment in the oil and gas industry and fully opened the electricity sector to private investment in generation. Widely hailed around the world for its ambition, reach, and speed of implementation, the reform has resulted in commitments of more than $220 billion and a dramatically improved outlook for Mexican oil production and reserves...
