NZ now a signatory of CPTPP (Trade and Export Growth Minister Hon David Parker above left signing the CPTPP in Santiago on March 9 and right with Chile's Foreign Minister Heraldo Munoz (C), and Canada's Trade Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne (L) before the signing) - New Zealand has inked the controversial 11-country Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on Trans Pacific Partnership in Chile to widespread business acclaim. The CPTPP will come into force after six countries, including New Zealand, ratify the agreement, which is expected to reignite further public opposition, but National has already signalled its support for ratification. The deal opens up potential trade gains between the 11-member countries, whose collective economies are worth $US10 trillion ($NZ13.7 trillion), but not entirely without the controversial catch whereby some corporates could still sue New Zealand. LATIN AMERICAN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
Economic Recovery appears to regain momentum in Q1
March 14, 2018 - Recent data for Latin America signals that economic activity in the region ended 2017 on a weaker footing than previously thought. An estimate shows that the Latin American economies expanded an aggregated 1.9% annually in Q4. While the print was above Q3’s 1.6% expansion, it was well below the 2.1% preliminary estimate expected last month. The downward adjustment mostly reflected weaker-than-expected growth in Brazil, Colombia and Peru, along with a downgrade to Mexico’s GDP data for Q4. US-Mexico Trade Deficit Grew 12% Despite US president Donald Trump’s threats to restrict trade with Mexico in order to reduce the US trade deficit with that country, it actually grew during his first year. The deficit reached $71.1 billion last year, up 12.4 percent from the 2016 deficit, according to a Latinvex analysis of of US Census Bureau data. That was higher than the US deficit with Latin America overall, which grew 9.3 percent to $47.8 billion. |
