GTSA News Blog: Argentina: A Perfect Storm Creates A Buying Opportunity - Forbes
2018 has been a tumultuous year for Argentina. From one of the most severe droughts the country has experienced in decades to the collapse of the peso and equity markets, to a $50 billion IMF bailout, a series of investor storms have hit Argentina and prompted investors to run for shelter. But while these economic setbacks have caused damage, they have also created a historic opportunity to cheaply buy into an economy which is about to get a significant second wind due to the economic policies of President Mauricio Macri. |

MANAGEMENT CHANGES FOR NZTE LATIN AMERICA Based in Sao Paulo, Steve Jones (left) is NZTE's new Regional Director for Latin America (where NZTE has offices in Chile, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico). The regional director's role has recently been expanded to reflect the New Zealand Government’s increased commitment to the region. Steve has held various international leadership roles for NZTE, most recently as Acting Trade Commissioner and Commercial Consul to Southern China, based in Guangzhou. From 2011 to 2014 he was Consul General to Dubai and the Northern Emirates, and Trade Commissioner to the Middle East, Africa and Pakistan, based in Dubai. Steve's priorities in his new role will be to expand New Zealand’s commercial engagement in the LATAM region, particularly in the agritechnology, food processing, security technology, software and specialised manufacturing sectors. Former South American Regional Director for NZTE, Nick Swallow, has been appointed New Zealand Trade Commissioner in the United Kingdom and Ireland, where he is responsible for promoting and facilitating trade opportunities and strategic relationships for New Zealand companies in the UK and Ireland. Nick has also worked for NZTE in New Zealand as Director of Marketing and Brand. He was involved in the inter-agency development of the New Zealand Story – an initiative that defines what makes us uniquely New Zealand and supports communicating the value of that to the world. Before joining NZTE in 2012, Nick spent 8 years with Auckland University of Technology as the Group Director for Marketing and Communications. Prior to that, he worked in the environmental sciences and ICT industries. |

LATIN AMERICAN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
Recovery stalls in third quarter
7 November - Incoming data suggests that the Latin American economy remained soft in the third quarter. FocusEconomics estimates that regional GDP growth (excluding Venezuela) remained broadly unchanged, inching up from Q2’s 1.7% to 1.8% year-on-year. The second quarter’s result had marked the worst performance in one year as shocks in major-players Argentina and Brazil held back growth. Preliminary data revealed that growth was stable in Mexico in the third quarter. The economy grew a solid 2.6% annually, with the services sector in the drivers’ seat amid higher consumer sentiment following the end of the country’s turbulent election cycle. Faster growth in the agricultural sector also supported activity, while mining activity was subdued due to weak oil and gas output... Mexico Airport: Default, Investor Confidence Loss Forget the honeymoon period normally granted to new presidents. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador hasn’t even assumed Mexico’s presidency yet and has already ruined his relationship with local and foreign investors. This week he announced he was cancelling the new, $13 billion airport being built in Mexico City – a move made despite warnings not to do so from technical experts, the local business community, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and even the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). “The decision by @lopezobrador on the new airport will be remembered as one of the worst stupidities by a president in contemporary economic history,” tweeted Enrique Cárdenas, a professor at the Iberoamericana University in Puebla... |
