Argentina's central bank hikes rates to 60% as the currency collapses

Investors are increasingly concerned Latin America's third-largest economy could soon default as it struggles to repay heavy government borrowing. This comes after Argentina's government unexpectedly asked for the early release of a $50 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday.

The Argentine peso crashed to record lows on the news. It saw steep losses in the previous session and collapsed another 15 percent to hit 39 pesos against the U.S. dollar on Thursday morning.

The peso is down more than 45 percent against the greenback this year, exacerbating pre-existing fears over the country's weakening economy while inflation is running at 25.4 percent this year.

Recovery stays on track in Q2 but headwinds to growth mount in Q3

September 12, 2018 Preliminary data revealed that growth held up in Latin America’s economy in the second quarter, despite global geopolitical uncertainty and political tensions in key economies. Regional GDP (excluding Venezuela) grew 1.9% over the same period last year in Q2, matching Q1’s result. Tailwinds from higher commodity prices, recovering private consumption and a solid global economy supported growth in the quarter. However, growth was uneven across countries and activity in the more vulnerable economies of Argentina and Brazil floundered.

Latin America: Panama Most Expensive City

Panamanian capital Panama City has become the most expensive city in Latin America, according to the latest cost of living survey from Swiss bank UBS.  Panama City now ranks 25th among 77 cities worldwide.  That means it is more expensive than cities like Frankfurt, Vienna, Dubai and Rome. The development comes as Panama now ranks as the richest country in Latin America, according to a new Latinvex analysis.
