Lacalle Pou officially declared Uruguay's next president

Conservative presidential candidate for the Partido Nacional Luis Lacalle Pou will be Uruguay's next president, the Electoral Court has confirmed.  The conservative Partido Nacional leader won the presidential run-off on November 24, his victory marking the first shift to the right in Argentina's neighbour in 15 years.

The race was tight. Only 28,666 votes separated Lacalle Pou from leftist candidate Daniel Martínez, running for the ruling Frente Amplio ("Broad Front") coalition. Such a close margin required the Electoral Court to undertake another official count. According to the court’s president José Arocena, there had "never been such a tight vote."

Bolivia reflects the deep polarization crisis in Latin America

The departure of former Bolivian President Evo Morales amid allegations of electoral fraud, coupled with political instability in several Latin American countries and the long-standing crisis in Venezuela, means that “the one constant in the region is uncertainty,” according to Jason Marczak, director of the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center.

Morales resigned his post as president on November 10 following weeks of demonstrations over vote-counting irregularities during the presidential election on October 20 which saw Morales receive just enough votes to avoid a run-off election with former president Carlos Mesa. Following his resignation, Morales fled the country on a Mexican government plane to Mexico City, where he was granted asylum by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO)......

How You Can Buy A Home In New Zealand Even If You Aren’t A Resident

Earlier this year New Zealand—a
Forbes top-ranked country for doing business—tightened the rules about who can purchase property in the country, limiting ownership rights to only those that were citizens, tax residents, spouses of the aforementioned or citizens of Australia and Singapore (due to existing free trade agreements).

However before the legislation was approved lawmakers had to appease the opposition by allowing for some overseas buyers, particularly those that would bring investment money into the country’s economy. As a result, developers of newly-built large condo buildings were allowed to apply for exemptions to sell to foreigners without requiring them to apply individually for residency statues. Sales have been strong ever since.....

The 11th International Economic Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean

The International Economic Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the most prominent Europe based events devoted to public policies in Latin America and the Caribbean. Every year, leaders from the public and private sectors as well as high-level representatives from international organisations gather to discuss different aspects of the continent's economic development. The LAC Forum 2019 focused on the relationship between inequalities and technologies and shared best practices towards more inclusive societies within the countries of the region. The Forum participants also discussed the technological environment and innovation incentives as enablers to ensure more equal LAC economies.

The end of protectionism in Latin America?

On Friday, June 28th 2019, it was announced that the European Commission had reached an agreement with Mercosur to create the largest Free Trade Agreement in its history. It has taken 20 long years to reach an agreement that affects a population of almost 800 million people and a quarter of the world's GDP. Now, Mercosur, one of the most protectionist and closed economic blocs in the world has a huge opportunity to make the economies of its member countries prosper: the EU is a colossus that buys more than two trillion dollars from the rest of the world every year. Dollars it spends on all kinds of products. Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay now have before them the best opportunity they’ve had in decades to overcome their economic problems. There’s only one condition: they will have to compete.....

LATIN AMERICAN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

Picture
November 7, 2019

After a weak 2019, regional growth is expected to regain steam next year. The acceleration will be driven chiefly by a pick-up in Brazil’s economy, thanks to monetary easing and reviving confidence. Growth is also seen accelerating in Chile, Mexico and Peru. However, Argentina is expected to remain in recession amid high inflation and policy uncertainty.

Regional inflation dropped to 7.5% in September, down from August’s 7.9%. Modest economic activity has contained price pressures in most economies, with the stark exceptions of Argentina and Venezuela. Inflation is seen falling moderately ahead as price pressures in Argentina ease.....

Chile:  Despite Protests,  LatAm Competitiveness Leader

Experts support Chile’s ranking as Latin America’s most competitive country.  Before the recent outbreak of violent protests in Chile, the World Economic Forum released its 2019 Global Competitiveness Report, ranking Chile as Latin America’s most competitive country, ranking it 33rd out of 141 countries included in the report. Mexico follows at the 48th position. Brazil, while it was the most improved economy in the region over the last year, comes in eighth, at the 71st position worldwide. Why is Chile so far ahead from the rest of the region in terms of competitiveness, and what is holding other countries back? What sorts of policies would improve Latin America and the Caribbean’s competitiveness? How does the region fare as compared to other parts of the world? Is the WEF’s competitiveness index the right tool for policymakers to focus on?.....

Like Tequila and Mezcal? Try Raicilla, Mexico’s Original Moonshine

It languished in relative obscurity for decades and was written off as Mexican moonshine, but raicilla has finally found its footing in the spirits market. Now, artisanal raicilla rubs shoulders with sotols and mezcals on bar menus across North America. Yet, outside of select circles, it maintains an enigmatic appeal.

“Raicilla is the mezcal of Jalisco,” says Nikhil Bahadur, co-owner of raicilla brand Las Perlas.

An agave spirit made from a variety of wild and cultivated plants in Jalisco, there are two distinct strains of raicilla: de la costa (coastal) and de la sierra (mountainous).

Whereas most mountainous raicilla is produced with maximiliana Baker, inaequidens Koch and valenciana agaves, coastal raicilla typically incorporates a wider range of agaves into the final product, including angustifolia Haw and rhodacantha.....
