Chile scraps Asia-Pacific and climate summits amid protests

Chilean President Sebastián Piñera says ongoing protests have compelled him to call off two major international summits that his country had been scheduled to host.  Piñera announced Wednesday that the Asia-Pacific summit set for November 16-17 and the global climate gathering planned for December 2-13 will no longer take place.

“This has been a very difficult decision, a decision that causes us a lot of pain, because we fully understand the importance of Apec and Cop 25 for Chile and for the world,” Piñera said in a brief statement from La Moneda palace in Santiago....

Chile protests: "People are fed up"

Eleven people have died so far in Chile since street protests escalated in Santiago over the weekend. A state of emergency already in place in the capital is to be extended to cities in the country's north and south. Chilean France 24 journalist Catalina Marchant De Abreu explains why the protests are happening now, and whether they are linked to similar movements in other Latin American Countries.

Is Peru Unable To Achieve Development?

In economic terms, for at least the last two decades, Peru has become a benchmark for Latin American countries. With high economic growth rates and a high commercial openness, in the last few years, Peru has experienced a huge decrease in poverty and has seen its middle class grow throughout the country. However, Peru’s economic model seems to be losing steam, and even after 25 years this model hasn’t allowed Peru to emulate the emerging Asian countries. There’s still a lot of poverty in the country and, despite all its growth, it still doesn’t have a productive, diversified and modern economy.

LATIN AMERICAN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

Picture
October 9, 2019

Latin America’s growth outlook was cut again this month, continuing the trend seen over the past six months. Headwinds from trade tensions and country-specific factors are seen stunting activity. Particularly, Argentina is seen stuck in a deep recession amid a confidence crisis, while fiscal consolidation, policy uncertainty and low sentiment are weighing on several economies.....

Business Leaders & USMCA: Lukewarm Outlook

Ten months after the signing of the US Mexico Canada Agreement on free trade (USMCA), business leaders in the US and Canada are lukewarm on the outlook for their companies, while Mexican business leaders are more upbeat, according to a new survey.

While only 52 percent of US business leaders and 55 percent of Canadian business leaders expected their companies to trade more internationally within five years, a whopping 76 percent of Mexican business leaders believed so.

Bolivia’s economy has undergone structural economic transformation during Evo Morales’s presidency. Real (inflation-adjusted) per capita GDP grew by more than 50 percent over these past 13 years. This was twice the rate of growth for the Latin American and Caribbean region. Even as the Latin American regional economy slowed over the past five years, Bolivia had the highest growth of per capita GDP in South America.

For most of the past 13 years, Bolivia has had balance of payments surpluses, which helped to maintain macroeconomic stability. The country’s solid economic growth has contributed substantially to the reduction of poverty and extreme poverty. The poverty rate has fallen below 35 percent (down from 60 percent in 2006) and the extreme poverty rate is 15.2 percent (down from 37.7 percent in 2006).

Bolivia’s economic transformation was possible due to overarching political transformations in the country. These included a new constitution with significant economic mandates; nationalization and public ownership of natural resources and some strategic sectors of the economy; redistributive public investment and wage policies; policy coordination between the Central Bank and the Finance Ministry; and monetary and exchange rate policies directed toward de-dollarizing the Bolivian financial system....

Mexico's Best Kept Secret Is Still A Little-Known Paradise On The Pacific

Playa La Ropa is the perfect tropical beach. Its soft sand is met with warm water and mellow waves breaking in shallow water. The beach is protected by Zihuatanejo Bay, which diminishes the force of Pacific swells with peninsulas at each point that just about cut it off from the ocean. That is, unless the swell is aimed squarely at the mouth of the bay.....

19 Latinx Movies To Watch On Netflix

Watching Spanish-language movies on Netflix is a great way to practice vocabulary and listening skills. Spanish films also allow you to learn about other cultures and gain exposure to different accents and slang.

If you are an intermediate or advanced learner, I recommend watching with Spanish subtitles as studies show it enhances language learning. I also jot down any interesting new vocabulary and add it to my Anki flashcards later.

Here are 29 top Spanish movies on Netflix streaming in the US as of September 2, 2019. If you’re not in the US, just click the title to check if the show is available in your country. Watch these films while you can, because content disappears as licensing agreements expire.

There are so many great Mexican movies on Netflix that I created a separate list for them. Also, don’t miss my recommendations for Spanish-language TV shows on Netflix.

Did you know that Mexico's Puerto Vallarta is a paradise for art lovers?

The resort town of Puerto Vallarta is known for its beautiful beaches, marine life and water sports. But, thanks to a growing number of murals, world-renowned galleries and the Malecon – its instantly-recognizable coastal promenade dotted with photo-worthy sculptures – the city has also become a destination for those who collect art and those who simply appreciate it.

"Puerto Vallarta has always had a vibrant art scene, from the naif paintings that Manuel Lepe sold Elizabeth Taylor back in the 1960s to the modern mural movement," says Kevin Simpson, an expat who owns three prominent art galleries in the city.

"Traditional folk art handcrafted in small villages by Indigenous people has become extremely collectible, and new infrastructure, cellular technology and access to the Internet have made it easier to connect with these artists. This change can also be seen in their art, with new colors and materials enabling them to express their ancient traditions and beliefs in a way that rivals contemporary art. It’s very exciting...."
