Latin America Business Digest Interview with the Ambassador of the Republic of Chile to New Zealand; HE Rodrigo Espinosa Marty

"Chile and NZ share basic principles of our western civilization, that is, respect for human rights, democracy and rule of law. On an economic level, both countries advocate free trade and a world with clear rules and institutions that allow this trade to be carried out in the safest and most reliable way. Regarding the main links between our peoples, I believe that the Working Holiday Visa Scheme has allowed thousands of young Chileans to get to know New Zealand society and learn from their culture, respect for nature and its politeness. This has definitely placed New Zealand as a model country, and Chile is trying to follow it."

Why is Brazil so important globally?

King's Brazil Institute has dedicated it’s time to pioneering research, digging below the surface of Brazilian life, since its launch over ten years ago. As such, it is taking a more active international role both in the region and beyond. Yet, it must also face notable challenges; notably corruption, criminality, inequality and others; all of which may undermine its rise as a great power....

LATIN AMERICAN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

August 7, 2019

Latin America’s growth outlook was cut for the fifth consecutive month in August, following a poor first half of 2019. A challenging global environment, plagued by persistent trade tensions and slowing growth, is seen holding back activity. Internal issues, such as Argentina’s economic adjustment, policy uncertainty in Mexico and declining confidence, also add to the downbeat outlook....

Panama Back on Gray List

Panama banks’ relationship with correspondent banks to be affected.  The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) earlier this year placed Panama back on its international money laundering watchlist.

The Central American nation was put on the so-called “gray list” in 2014 over flaws in the country’s financial practices. It was removed in 2016 after changes to its legal and regulatory framework, but the FATF has now reversed that decision despite heavy lobbying from officials in Panama.

Why has Panama been placed back on the FATF’s gray list? What are the consequences of the decision for its business sector and economy? What needs to happen for Panama to be removed from the list?

This Luxury Train to Machu Picchu Winds Through the Peruvian Highlands in Style

The food is divine, the views are dreamy, and the vibes are very Hogwarts Express.  Passing through the lush grounds of Tambo del Inka in the Sacred Valley of Peru, my eyes flit as I look for the first glimpse of my ride to Machu Picchu: a 1920s-style luxury train by PeruRail. As someone who’s inexperienced with train travel I’m ecstatic to be traveling to a bucket-list destination in such a posh way. After walking for about five minutes, I come upon the train tracks, and a sleek blue-and-gold train awaits.....

Mexico's mysterious uncharted Caves

Around 66 million years ago, a 15km-wide asteroid smashed into Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and is believed to have wiped out almost all the dinosaurs. The impact caused a megatsunami, liquified billions of tonnes of rock and created a 200km-wide crater in the Earth’s surface into which water seeped, creating thousands of sinkholes. Over millennia, some of these limestone sinkholes collapsed while others in the region eroded, forming vast networks of flooded cave systems.....

Amid fresh meltdown, Argentine film gives last laugh to victims of 2001 crisis

With Argentina once again reeling from a financial crisis, a film released on Thursday shows residents from a village outside Buenos Aires pursuing the dream of many of those left penniless by the country’s 2001 debt default: getting their money back. The film by Argentine director Sebastian Borensztein, “La Odisea de los Giles” (“the Odyssey of the Naive”), is a fictional payback story for a nation still traumatized by the meltdown two decades ago that plunged much of the population into poverty - at a time of fresh economic turmoil....
