Buenos Aires Times - Argentina Presidential Primary Election
Alberto Fernández & running mate Cristina Kirchner score huge victory over Mauricio Macri

Opposition presidential candidate Alberto Fernández emerged from Argentina's PASO primaries with a huge victory over incumbent President Mauricio Macri, shocking the nation with a huge margin.

The margin of victory indicates Macri faces a huge challenge ahead if he is to win re-election. The president admitted as much on Sunday night, as he faced supporters before provisional numbers had even been announced. He had hoped to earn a second mandate, but his chances now appear all but over.....

Bolivia - Flight Of The Bumblebees

With a worldwide decline in the bee population, Yungas beekeepers protect their hives.

Outside Coroico, a small town in the centre of the sparsely populated Nor Yungas Region, a select few begin the process of tearing apart egg cartons and breaking decaying wood into small pieces.

They then light the material on fire and place it into a large metal cup, known as a smoker, which apiculturists use to spray bees with smoke in order to calm them....

Colombia's Buzzing Comeback City

In 2016, the Colombian government and the Farc rebels signed a historic peace deal, ending half a century of civil war and opening the floodgates for tourism.

Last year, more than four million foreigners visited the country, up from only 1.3 million a decade ago.

And while the cities of Bogota, Cartagena and Medellin top most travellers' lists, only one in 20 visits Santiago de Cali, or Cali for short, a hot, vibrant, buzzing city of 2.7 million in the valley of the Cauca River in the country's south....

Institutions for Productivity: Towards a Better Business Environment in Latin America

In 1960, average income in Latin America was only about 20 percent of that in the United States. Almost sixty years later, Latin Americans find themselves in largely the same position, despite remarkable economic progress in other developing regions. “Institutions for Productivity: Towards a Better Business Environment,” a new report from CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, points to low productivity as a primary culprit for the region’s limited capacity to transform productive resources into high-quality goods and services.....

Argentina Economy: Voters reject Macri's austerity agenda

To Argentina now, where markets have plummeted after President Mauricio Macri lost a primary election, paving the way for the rise of his left-wing opponent, Alberto Fernandez. Both the peso and the stock exchange tumbled after voters rejected Macri's cost-cutting agenda. And that points to a potential victory in October for the opposition, which wants to reverse many of his unpopular economic reforms....

LATIN AMERICAN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

Picture
August 7, 2019

Latin America’s growth outlook was cut for the fifth consecutive month in August, following a poor first half of 2019. A challenging global environment, plagued by persistent trade tensions and slowing growth, is seen holding back activity. Internal issues, such as Argentina’s economic adjustment, policy uncertainty in Mexico and declining confidence, also add to the downbeat outlook....

Haiti and the end of petropolitics in the Caribbean

Historically, Haiti’s economic situation has been particularly dramatic as compared to the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean. According to World Bank data, while the average Gross Domestic Product for Haitians averages $770 a year per person, the average in Latin America is $9,300 annually.

A particularly poor economy, frequently struck by forces of nature, such as earthquakes and hurricanes, hasn’t been able to settle down in the institutional sense, constantly submitting its citizens to political and social volatility.

In light of such a vulnerable situation, the emergence of Petrocaribe was a provisional life saver for the region’s poorest economy. The main objective of late Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez’s Petropolitics was subsidizing fuel to Caribbean islands in exchange for votes in the OAS and UN.....

The Secrets of Lima's Cutting Edge Ceviche

Walking around Lima, where there are cevicherías in every neighborhood and each one is bursting with locals, you would never know that ceviche—a citrus-marinated seafood starter—wasn't invented in Peru. Crude forms of the dish—at its most basic, raw fish marinated in a lime, fish stock, and ají chile mixture—are found all along Latin America's Pacific Coast and have been for centuries. Yet, it is in Peru that the most elaborate versions have taken shape, influenced by waves of immigrants and international chefs.....
