The Flight of the Phoenix

It is often said that politics is theatre. This has been especially true during the past four years in Argentina, which have been a high-stakes melodrama along Kafkaesque lines, redolent with existential anxiety, alienation and absurdity.

The convoluted plot sees the ruling President Mauricio Macri and his coterie of media magnates and partisan judges trying to bury the immediate past president, Cristina Kirchner, in criminal prosecutions and relentless calumny. But when their neoliberal economic policies crash and burn it is the populist Cristina who is ascending from the ashes.....

Peru plunges into political crisis, bringing dark days for a dynasty

LIMA, Peru (AP) — President Martín Vizcarra dissolved the congress early this week and called new elections after a dispute with lawmakers over anti-corruption efforts, unilaterally eliminating Fuerza Popular’s hard-won majority in the legislature.

Meanwhile, Fuerza Popular's
leader, Keiko Sofia Fujimori Higuchi, was already sitting behind bars at a women’s jail filled with drug traffickers and petty thieves while she is investigated for money laundering.....

THE Q MEDIA
There are four main reasons why South America did not develop as much as North America

To be clear, the meaningful contrast is between Anglo-America and Latin America, since Mexico and arguably Central America are part of North America, but they had histories similar to those of the South American countries.

First, the Iberian government and economic systems which were the legacy of South America, colonized by Spain and Portugal, were far inferior to the Anglo Saxon, Anglo American systems.

Spain and Portugal bestowed feudalistic political economies on their colonies, with a basically parasitic rentier class living off of the labor of peasants. (In some of those colonies, strictly hierarchical societies—such as that of the Aztec—may have preceded the arrival of Europeans.)....

Chicago Council on Global Affairs - Trade and Economic Realities for North and South America

North and South America have nearly every dynamic imaginable: financially beneficial trade partnerships, challenging political relationships, and immigration and environmental concerns. Currently, the region is being tested even further – with both positive and negative outcomes - by the US-China trade war, persisting US-Mexico border issues, and upcoming elections in Argentina that could decide the region’s economic fate. All of the regional economies are increasingly interconnected and rising political tensions could impact more than just the global economy. How will escalating tensions affect US trade partnerships and investments in this region?

Can new regional bloc PROSUR reunite South America?

Leaders of some, but not all, South American countries met in Santiago, Chile in March, to launch a new regional organization called PROSUR that seems specifically aligned against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. PROSUR's primary purpose appears to be replacing UNASUR, (The Union of South American Nations). UNASUR was developed ten years ago by the late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez to counter U.S. influence in the region. Why exactly is UNASUR breaking apart? And will this new group succeed in further isolating Maduro? As the continent's heavyweight, what's Brazil's position and role on the issue?

'People were dropping like flies’: why 'Monos' was the decade's most brutal film shoot

When Alejandro Landes took 25 youngsters on a bootcamp high in the Andes to make a psychedelic drama about child soldiers, reality almost outpaced his movie. Monos is set in a South American paradise but comes off like Lord of the Flies in hell. Following an eight-strong group of teen soldiers and their adult prisoner of war, it is sensual, and gorgeous and intensely, continuously disturbing. The kids – Dog, Lady, Bigfoot, Boom-Boom, Rambo, Swede, Wolf, Smurf – are left to their own devices except for the occasional visit from “the Messenger”, who works for whatever organisation has recruited them. So they scrap and kiss and fire their AK-47s into the sky.....

Artists fight censorship after Brazil bans gay films, comics

Brazil’s highest court has ruled that banning books and films over LGBT+ content was illegal but when an Avengers comic featuring a gay kiss was banned from Brazil’s largest book festival, author Nana Queiroz stuffed copies of her latest bestseller into a suitcase in a bid to outwit authorities’ latest move to silence LGBT+ storytellers. “I decided that if they didn’t allow us to sell the books at the fair, I would go on the streets and do it there,” said Queiroz, who was promoting “Eu, Travesti” or “I, Transvestite” co-written with transvestite activist Luisa Marilac....
