Airline Industry is Sceptical About Proposed Solution to Mexico City Airport Crunch

Four months after President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador pledged to scrap a $13 billion airport project for Mexico City, the airline industry is bursting with questions about his plan to operate three hubs for the nation’s capital. His administration is still short on answers.

Running three airports will be “very, very, very challenging” given Mexico City’s altitude, temperature and surrounding mountains, Alexandre de Juniac, head of the International Air Transport Association, said at an airline conference in the Mexican capital. “Let me be perfectly clear, there will be no compromise on safety....”

South American presidents announce creation of new regional bloc

A group of South American leaders signed a declaration on Friday to create a bloc they say is open to any country, regardless of ideology, to collaborate on solving regional problems.

Presidents from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru attended the summit in the Chilean capital of Santiago. Chile and Colombia had led the push for the new ‘Prosur’ political grouping after criticism that a previous bloc, Unasur, failed to take action on crisis-stricken Venezuela.

“This will be a forum with a firm and clear commitment to democracy, freedom and a respect for human rights,” said Chilean President Sebastian Pinera following the signing ceremony.

The Traditional Cuisine of Chile

Chilean food is fairly simple but varied and seafood, beef, fruit and vegetables all feature heavily. The cuisine stems from a combination of traditional Spanish cuisine, Chilean indigenous culture and local ingredients and is influenced by German, Italian and French cuisines. The country’s unique geography and climate has resulted in an abundance of fruit, vegetables and other agricultural products. The country is probably best known for its seafood with an immense array being caught along its vast coastline.
The Humboldt Current is responsible for bringing in a rich supply of seafood (including paua, razor clams, mussels, spider crabs, oysters, conger eels, salmon swordfish, hake, tuna and sole). Grilled meats are also popular and beef now tends to be more common than llama meat, having being brought in by Europeans. Other popular foods include stews, empanadas, corn, beans, potatoes and exotic tropical fruits such as lucuma and cherimoya. - chimuadventures.com

LATIN AMERICAN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

Picture
Picture
Weak Q4 2018 caps sluggish year for Latin America

Latin America’s economic recovery appeared to veer off the rails somewhat through last year’s fourth quarter, ending a chaotic year for the regional economy. A preliminary estimate by FocusEconomics revealed that the regional economy grew 1.2% year-on-year in the fourth quarter; if confirmed, this would be down from the third quarter’s 1.5% outturn and would mark a full year of slowing economic activity. Deteriorating inter- and intraregional trade has been weighing on the regional economy, as has last year’s noisy political wrangling and, more broadly, emerging-market (EM) turmoil. One-off shocks to the region’s major-player economies also took their toll....

Digital Banking: The New Latin American Paradigm

El Salvador, Honduras and Paraguay see boom in mobile money services. We are living through the fourth industrial revolution and technology is a fundamental factor of the changes we have seen. Financial services too must get on board with the new trend and be part of the next revolution, the digital economy.  In order to innovate, financial services must do it through technology, since it offers infinite options to provide new experiences, empower users, and level society. Today the use of the cellphone allows us to pay bills and make financial transactions online leveling the worlds citizens regardless of their social class....
