Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia denounce decision on Amazon domain

The presidents of Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia criticized a recent decision by the organization that manages internet protocol to grant global retailer Amazon Inc the rights to the .amazon domain.

Amazon Inc has been seeking the exclusive rights to the .amazon domain name since 2012. But Amazon basin countries - including Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia - have argued it refers to their geographic region and should not be the monopoly of one company.

The four leaders - Peru’s Martin Vizcarra, Colombia’s Ivan Duque, Ecuador’s Lenin Moreno and Bolivia’s Evo Morales - vowed to join forces to protect their countries from what they described as inadequate governance of the internet.

  • Identifying opportunities and challenges and outlining the scope of potential projects between the three partners (China, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and potentially other interested countries in South America) which would help turn the theory behind the idea into practice
  • Developing a sense of the value that could be created by trilateral co-operation – including, from a NZ perspective, the added value that could be created for our relationships with both China and South America
  • Continuing to focus government, business and public attention on the opportunities for leverage arising from participation in BRI.

Latin America growth prospects cut again in May on weak incoming Q1 data

May 15, 2019 - Activity is seen remaining soft this year, picking up only slightly from a dismal 2018, and growth prospects were cut again this month on weak incoming Q1 data. A challenging external environment and political uncertainty are weighing on this year’s outlook. The modest uptick in growth will be driven by slightly stronger growth in Brazil and a smaller drag from Argentina....

Argentina: Macri Fails Taming Inflation

Argentine President Mauricio Macri is failing completely in taming the high inflation rates he inherited from his predecessor. In fact, prices are going up faster now than during the government of Cristina Kirchner (2007-2015), when they averaged 25.2 percent.
This year, Argentina will likely see an inflation rate of 43.7 percent, according to new estimates from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). That’s nearly twice what the government had estimated in its 2019 budget and the highest rate in the current IMF inflation database for Argentina going back more than 20 years -- to 1998.
