New president pledges to cure 'sick child' El Salvador

El Salvador’s new president, Nayib Bukele, took office pledging to cure the Central American country that he described as a “sick child” following years of violence and migration that has strained relations with the United States.

The 37-year-old former mayor of San Salvador, who won more votes than all other candidates in the February presidential election, brought an end to a two-party system that has held sway over the country for three decades.

“Our country is like a sick child, now it’s up to all of us to take care of it,” Bukele told the crowd. “We have to suffer a little now, we have to have a little pain, assume our responsibility and all as brothers to bring forward that child.”

Latin America is increasingly embracing the Belt and Road Initiative

Much like the Arctic, Latin America and the Caribbean were only recently integrated in the Belt and Road Initiative’s growing blueprint. But since then the BRI has seen the rise of many new partners from this region.

In the last six years, since the BRI was first put forward, it has expanded its scope and now includes different regions from Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

Initially, Latin America was not included in the BRI but despite the region’s geographical distance from the BRI roadmap, many LAC leaders and diplomats were eager to participate in the initiative. For instance, in 2015, Bolivia’s ambassador to China affirmed that the BRI is “extremely important to Bolivia’s future development." Shortly thereafter Peru’s former foreign minister and ambassador to China, Gonzalo Gutiérrez Reinel, wrote an article in People’s Daily conveying Peru’s hope that the BRI would be extended to Latin America....

Justice Minister & 'Lava Jato' Judge Moro under fire in Brazil after leaked messages hint at conspiracy against Lula

Brazil's high-profile Justice Minister Sergio Moro and Brazilian prosecutors allegedly collaborated to convict former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on corruption charges to prevent him from contesting the 2018 election,

Citing leaked documents, The Intercept website co-founded by Glenn Greenwald said an anonymous source had provided material, including private chats, audio recordings, videos and photos, that show "serious wrongdoing, unethical behaviour, and systematic deceit."

  • Bringing together around 200 international experts and key stakeholders to discuss these ideas, identify potential coalition partners and develop recommendations to governments
  • Identifying opportunities and challenges and outlining the scope of potential projects between the three partners (China, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and potentially other interested countries in South America) which would help turn the theory behind the idea into practice
  • Developing a sense of the value that could be created by trilateral co-operation – including, from a NZ perspective, the added value that could be created for our relationships with both China and South America
  • Continuing to focus government, business and public attention on the opportunities for leverage arising from participation in BRI.

Guyana & New Zealand sign Air Services Agreement

Guyana has entered an Air Services Agreement with New Zealand.  The Agreement, which grants both States the right to conduct international air transport within a common framework, was signed by Vice President and Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon Carl Greenidge, (on left in photo) and NZ High Commissioner HE Anton Ojala.

The signing of the Agreement stems from a joint desire to broaden international air transport opportunities and outlines the related parameters that will enhance competitive air transport services, trade and economic growth.

Guyana and New Zealand established diplomatic relations on September 1, 1974, and continue to enjoy strong relations.

Latin America growth prospects cut again in May on weak incoming Q1 data

May 15, 2019 - Activity is seen remaining soft this year, picking up only slightly from a dismal 2018, and growth prospects were cut again this month on weak incoming Q1 data. A challenging external environment and political uncertainty are weighing on this year’s outlook. The modest uptick in growth will be driven by slightly stronger growth in Brazil and a smaller drag from Argentina....

Argentina: Macri Fails Taming Inflation

As economy suffers its second consecutive recession Argentine President Mauricio Macri is failing completely in taming the high inflation rates he inherited from his predecessor. In fact, prices are going up faster now than during the government of Cristina Kirchner (2007-2015), when they averaged 25.2 percent.  This year, Argentina will likely see an inflation rate of 43.7 percent, according to new estimates from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). That’s nearly twice what the government had estimated in its 2019 budget and the highest rate in the current IMF inflation database for Argentina going back more than 20 years -- to 1998.
