Mexican Voters Love Their President, But Investors Are Wary

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, or AMLO as he’s known, is doing spectacularly well with voters 100 days into his term. The latest survey pegs his approval rating at 78 percent, a record for the first trimester of a presidential term since polling began in the 1980s.  But just as his popularity is soaring, market sentiment is souring, widening a divide between investors and the president’s base. The clearest sign of this is a substantial markdown in growth forecasts by Wall Street analysts....

How Black Panamanians Have Made Gold Jewelry an Intrinsic Part of Their Culture

Across different communities and cultures, people pile on gold jewelry. They wear gold earrings in neat rows on their ear lobes, they stack gold rings of varying sizes on their fingers, or they layer gold necklaces, which sit sparkling on their collarbones. It’s a highly valued and treasured metal to people across the world, but not every group has as interesting a relationship with gold as Black Panamanians....

Despite the gender gap, Mexican and Brazilian women take the lead on investment decisions

Though most women defer to their spouses on long-term financial decisions, there are significant differences across markets. For example, women in Singapore, Hong Kong and Switzerland are the most likely to defer. Women in the UK and Germany also defer, though to a lesser degree. Just over half of women in Italy (52%) and the US (54%) defer. Notably, women in Mexico and Brazil are the least likely to defer to their spouses. More than half of these women either make long-term financial decisions jointly or take the lead themselves, the highest among all the markets surveyed.

The Traditional Cuisine of Chile

Chilean food is fairly simple but varied and seafood, beef, fruit and vegetables all feature heavily. The cuisine stems from a combination of traditional Spanish cuisine, Chilean indigenous culture and local ingredients and is influenced by German, Italian and French cuisines. The country’s unique geography and climate has resulted in an abundance of fruit, vegetables and other agricultural products.

The country is probably best known for its seafood with an immense array being caught along its vast coastline including paua, razor clams, mussels, spider crabs, oysters, conger eels, salmon swordfish, hake, tuna and sole. The Humboldt Current is responsible for bringing in this rich supply of seafood. Grilled meats are also popular and beef now tends to be more common than llama meat, having being brought in by Europeans. Other popular foods include stews, empanadas, corn, beans, potatoes and exotic tropical fruits such as lucuma and cherimoya.

Weak Q4 2018 caps sluggish year for Latin America

March 13, 2019 - Latin America’s economic recovery appeared to veer off the rails somewhat through last year’s fourth quarter, ending a chaotic year for the regional economy. A preliminary estimate by FocusEconomics revealed that the regional economy grew 1.2% year-on-year in the fourth quarter; if confirmed, this would be down from the third quarter’s 1.5% outturn and would mark a full year of slowing economic activity. Deteriorating inter- and intraregional trade has been weighing on the regional economy, as has last year’s noisy political wrangling and, more broadly, emerging-market (EM) turmoil. One-off shocks to the region’s major-player economies also took their toll....

Mexico: AMLO’s First 100 Days

As international ratings agencies cut their ratings and economists cut their predictions of economic growth, Mexico’s new president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced that he was pleased with his first 100 days.  A clear majority of Mexicans agree, with a new poll showing a whopping 78 percent approval rating.    Another poll shows him at 67 percent. That survey shows AMLO, as the president is popularly known, getting points for cutting government expenditure through salary cuts for public servants and eliminating pensions for ex-presidents as well as getting rid of presidential guards, selling the presidential plane and opening up the presidential palace to the public....
