Sixty-four years ago today, July 13th, Frida Kahlo died at just 47 years old, possibly by suicide, following a stormy year in which she developed gangrene and an addiction to the painkillers she needed for the many surgeries she'd recently undergone. Oh, and she also had her right leg amputated--and, somehow, after years of being practically bed-bound, managed to attend the opening of her first-ever solo exhibition. Her will is just one reason why Kahlo's icon status endures today—and it's also just one example of how the "Frida" everyone knows on a first-name basis has been glamorized. Why China and Latin America are discussing trade now
Foreign ministers from Latin America and China met in Chile for a two-day summit focusing on trade, which is becoming crucial for the growth of both. Leaders from the 33-member Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) want to make sure that relations with China go beyond its appetite for commodities. |
US Interventions in Latin America Continue and Intensify
Most US citizens don't realize it, but the US government has continued and even intensified its regime change agenda in Latin America and successfully helped reverse the so-called "pink tide" of left-of-center governments over the past ten years, says CEPR's Mark Weisbrot |

LATIN AMERICAN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
Growth holds up in Q2 despite political turbulence
Available data suggests that Latin America’s economic momentum held up in the second quarter, despite political turbulence in key economies and an uncertain economic backdrop. Regional GDP (excluding Venezuela) is expected to have expanded 2.0% annually in Q2, a notch above Q1’s 1.9% increase. Higher commodity prices buttressed growth in commodity-exporting countries, while healthy consumption is expected to have supported activity in Mexico. That said, the acceleration was moderate considering Q1’s growth reading was weighed on by adverse calendar effects that dissipated in Q2. Moreover, economic slack persists in the region, especially in major players Argentina and Brazil. Mexico’s AMLO: A New Chavez or Lula? Will Mexico’s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who in December assumes the presidency of Latin America’s second-largest economy, become a new Hugo Chavez (the man who ruined Venezuela’s once-prosperous economy) or a new Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (the leftist firebrand who in the end implemented relatively pragmatic economic policies and presided over Brazil’s best economic performance in 25 years)? |
